There's something about grainy black and white that says there's news to be reported. Well, this is my blog and I'll be self serving if I wanna be, right Lesley Gore? This week has been a pretty good one for me. Here's what's up, newsboy.

1. I was asked some months ago to to work with Feast Portland, the newest, biggest, and baddest food festival around. The request was to help them fulfill their photography needs while they got their advertising under way. Taking place the 20th - 23rd of September, Feast is a top of the line food festival that connects the dots between Portland and the international food scene, showcasing just why Portland, Oregon, has the renowned buzz that it does. It's been an exciting ride to be on the rails for as they've been pulling in some really great sponsors such as Whole Foods and the newly added Bon Appétit magazine. I mean, really, you couldn't ask for better people and companies to stand next to! However, the most humbling aspect of this situation is the great local & top of the line photographers who I've been able to contribute alongside of. Image makers like Lincoln Barbour and John Valls, that's some good company to keep. We even got our own little call out on the Feast website.

2. Next up and also something I'm very excited about is that I've been asked to contribute two of my photographs to Wieden Kennedy's Portland 100 show. Showcasing 100 pieces on the white wall by local illustrations and photographers, the opening will debut on the 2nd of February, First Thursday, at the Portland Wieden Kennedy gallery, and all the pieces will be priced at $100 with half of that going to a very worthy cost. While it's totally feel good to even be invited it's also very rewarding to be able to help out with a good cause. Bonus points for having something up in the same gallery that Daniel Johnston recently filled. If you're in the neighborhood and are into free drinks and art/ad stuff then you should head over to the NW side of town and join up with us as we gaze upon what's been tacked up!

B D A Y P A R T Y @ T H E J U N K S P O T

I've been slowly working on a collaborative project revolving around homeless camping in the urban environment. In search for homeless camps, here are a couple of shots from a junk spot we came across several weeks ago. The juxtaposition between family photos of youthful moments found inches away from syringes suggests that there's a story ready to be told. And the way we're going to tell it is a good one. However, the project has been put on hold recently and will resume in the spring when the shelters clear and tents begin to appear again under the trees. Keep an eye out.

I K N O W T H A T G I R L

I've got a friend who just picked up her degree in apparel design here in Portland. Part of her final was to make these tops which she then needed to shoot for a presentation. She asked me to show her some interesting locations around my neighborhood in North Portland that might allow for unique backdrops. While showing her around I stood to the side and popped off a couple of shots just for practice. If you're not shooting your not practicing and you know what high school athletic coaches have to say about that. Also, it helps that I'm tight with the model she used...

Over at my totally official website www.matthewjasperson.com I've got a new series of photos posted. They're located in folder #1 with the current name of Haze Days. A little wavy and hazy with an edge of eerie, I've also toyed with the name of Phantom Sands. Admittedly, this sounds a little bit like a golf course, but still, I like it. If you, kind viewer, would leave your valued opinion I'd be ever so grateful.

Side notes: You might notice while over at my website that there's an entirely new web design featuring simplified navigation and fantastically fun image slideshows. I hope you like - comments always welcome. In the near future you'll also see some content changes as I add new series of photos while taking others off. I think you're going to enjoy what you find. A day with the mobs proved to yield too many pictures to post at one time, so here's a slide show. In it you get a sense of the many messages, opinions, and points of view that people are attempting to share and discuss through the Occupy Portland / Occupy Wall Street protest platform. The last image, the black and white one, is from their camp at Chapman Park on the morning of 10/7. Cold and wet, several hundred individuals maintained smiles in a continued effort to get their voices heard. Just after this last photo was taken, controversy began to spark over the protesters' continued presence in the park as the Portland Marathon currently holds the use permits for this weekend.

Bill Cunningham Runs The Streets -

We saw Bill Cunningham in NYC the other week. I actually had no idea who he was but luckily my special lady keeps herself knowledgeable about the world and pointed him out to me. I then snapped and edited this photo.An interesting and amazing New York fixture, he's been working the fashion world for years, the majority of them at the Times. I actually just heard that the Willamette Week has started biting his layout style in their rag. Turns out that he casts a pretty big shadow and I'm not sure they have a body big enough over there... Anyways, I know about his shadow, and influence, through the recently released, and very good, documentary Bill Cunningham New York. My suggestion is that you watch this film. Bill, as the subject, is entirely delightful and moving, and the passion he shows for his work is ultimately inspiring. I'm going to say it again, watch this film. I've been thinking about this movie, Bill Cunningham, and photography as a medium all day because of it.

ERIK HART Polaroid Outtakes: Spring '12, NYFW

I took two cameras to the Factory by Erik Hart Spring '12 show for New York Fashion Week. Here's the outtakes from that second camera, my Polaroid Spectra. These were shot on softtone spectra film, purchased from the Impossible Project, and feature the use of a red ring filter. While at the show, which took place in the lovely highline room in the Standard, NY, I was actually photographed for having my Spectra Polaroid camera with me, which was interesting. The photog who asked to snap me had it in her mind, from somewhere undetermined, that I worked for the Impossible Project. While I wouldn't mind a position of some sort in that bunch, it was a strange thing to be asked.

TIBI: Spring '12, New York Fashion Week

Another post from New York Fashion Week, this one a brief look covering the TIBI show. I have to be honest, the entire week was such an event that I was pretty burnt by this show, and some of the details slipped right on past me. It was another packed house full of a,b, & c listers and the largest host of photographers so far (second image, left). The stage set up for this event featured a U shaped runway rather than the traditional out and back. I felt that to be a little distracting, as I ended up attempting to watch up to 3 girls walking at any one time. TIBI's '12 spring line proved to be the most everyday wearable of any of the shows we'd seen thus far, and the casting of models complemented this look well. What was missing from this TIBI show that's most noticeable, looking back at previous debuts from the brand, is the lack of prints. Something to keep in mind when the remainder of the line is debuted next spring... Word.

BADGLEY MISCHKA: Spring '12, New York Fashion Week

After a couple of smaller shows earlier in the week this Badgley Mischka show was a large scale production which was very fun to see. Everything from the music to the models was spot on and I've got to say, the hair was incredible, done by Peter Gray for Moroccanoil. I've read reviews of what the vision of the show was trying to attain, and I think those involved accomplished the portrayal of that vision very well. Fun colors and distinctive flowing shapes allow for the classically elegant (think late 50's) woman to feel updated in a contemporary and edgy, yet feminine, visual structure. The looks were simply great.

I'm hoping to add in the main song that was used for the walk but in the time being just click through to the very enjoyable and uplifting "Add Ends" by When The Saints Go Machine, which was mixed by fashion-wise music man Javier Peral.

The look was great, the models were fitting, and photogs were out in force. I'd like to know who the music was, as that's the only thing I haven't been able to recall.

Personal Reaction: A great line-up show where I felt the weakest link may have been the casting. I just wasn't sold on the fact that these models were effectively communicating the show's vision. Aside from that I loved the simplistic nature of the cuts and colors. This line would be something comfortable to wear while espousing your personal confidence through simple and refined elegance.

Thinking About It: instant photography -

I've been pondering the use of instant film for the last year or so. With the recent resurgence, popularity, and vast amount of wonderful imagery captured on instant film, it can be difficult to qualify it's uses, for either good or bad. In the end, as with most explorations of aesthetic materials, quality can be defined in many ways, and none of them without a certain amount of personal subjective criticism.

For me instant format photography is about the immediate now. While many photographers are choosing to use this format within a studio or set setting, and producing beautiful results through the process (example), I'd rather be searching for live action moments in a real world circus, the crazy simplicity of life at the drop of a pin, or, more specifically, at the click of a button. In turn, I'm not searching for the beautiful model in the right form-fitting dress, rather, I'm looking for interest in the aspect of the ordinary instant and the people it contains. This concept can be evidenced in both the images directly above & below, or in a series such as Instant Joy, and it's something I strive to maintain every time I pick up one of my polaroid cameras.

Wye Oak is Andy Stack & Jenn Wasner out of Baltimore, Maryland. On March 29th the old North Portland flagpole that is Mississippi Studios was lucky enough to witness their second visit in just a couple of months. Coming off a well received showing at sxsw a couple of weeks earlier, and out on tour in support of their widely reviewed new album, Civilian, I was excited to get a glimpse of Wye Oak while in their process of growth. They didn't disappoint. Showcasing an improved stage presence the duo showed exactly why they've been gaining momentum recently: swells of dynamic noise, crescendos of musical racket so thick that you'd swear to yourself and others that there were more than two people up on that stage. At least you'd swear to it if you hadn't seen it live. With Jenn picking up the guitar and vocals, blending the two seamlessly, that leaves Andy to fill in the gaps on Keys, drums, and synth. Yeah, that's keys/synth with the left hand and drums with the right... At the same time. The truth is that both parts of the Wye Oak equation are very gifted. Together, they make wonderfully full music with both voluptuous body and angsty soul.

As they're still out there on tour right now I'd check them out if you get the chance, before it becomes a fighting situation for tickets. Oh and by the way, they'll be back this way in early August as they've just signed on to join NW natives in a musical celebration called Pick-A-Thon.

Several weeks ago I got this jammed up roll of film back from my processing shop. Not really sure what to do with it, I let it simmer until yesterday when I edited it digitally to put it in a vertical perspective. In this perspective you can see the next shot down actually start on the right of the black bar on the shot above. This view allows the viewer to survey my train of thought, or lack there of, while shooting this particular roll of film. I personally like the little abstract narrative that it forms, especially if you view the shots from the bottom up.

Speaking of friends (see the image below - birds of a feather drink together), I've currently got a little project in the works where I'm slowly filling up a bowl full of Polaroids of friends. While this bowl might look a little sparse (there's actually more in there than it looks like) I'm also just getting started. Be on the look out for updates.

To note: I've got another project in mind for friendly portraits but it's much more involved, consisting of: airplane trips around the country, a carousel projector & slides, sourcing old images/negatives, landscape work, and studio time. Perhaps a grant is in order...? Regional Arts & Culture Council, anyone?

Crab kills me. Seriously, I'm allergic. However, this was one of our many wonderful holiday meals over the last month. My wife is a fiend for crab, and seafood in General. Whenever we visit her folks, there's a likely chance that this will be on the menu.

Side Note: I've never shot a lot of B&W before but you should get ready for a couple of posts featuring it. I recently killed a couple of rolls and really enjoyed some of the results. I hope you do too.

I'd rather it be Friday evening and for us to be sipping these around a fire, with a fragrant tree set off to the side of the room - done up in twinkling lights, and surrounded by friends, than at the office on this Monday Morning. Even though it's that kind of a gray day, however, I think it's going to be just fine. A fine day/week/month indeed. Hope you're feeling the same.

These are all shot through the bottom of a bottle while camping. The first three are of friends, the last is of the campfire we had to warm our feet and hands. I'm not sure where this could go but I like the slight abstractions that came out of it.

H O L I D A Z E

We're nearing the holidays and I'm excited. Even though Portland has pulnged headlong into gloom and wet there's just something strongly nostalgic about this time of year. Holiday lights, a cup of cider and some family to visit, the feelings of the season always sneak up on me. In order to prepare a little bit, I culled these images from last year's shots in order to further remind both my heart and my eye what's around the corner.

H O L G A 1 3 5 B C - girl and pet

Back in September, while in Thailand, I picked up a new little Holga that got me super stoked. It had a flashy red n' white color way and rolled 35mm film rather than 120mm. What's more, when I got home I found that an old 70's hot shoe flash I had fit it very nicely and helped to produced some really fun images (image #1&2 above is my lady and our dog on the corner where we live, shot in low light using expired film w/no flash | image #3 is a multiple exposure set I did of the dog when testing out the flash - pretty awesome result!). The bummer side of this story is that I only was able to put one roll through the camera before it went missing on Halloween, along with all of our costume pictures that were on it. Lame. However, I liked it so much that I've got a new one on order from HK, so be on the lookout for some more of this kinda stuff. I'm checking the mailbox every day.

On another note, the post below this has some Polaroids that I shot on 1993 era 600 film. I loved the way that they turned out but old film like that can be hard to find and the people that have it must be trying to buy new houses because that stuff does not come cheap. Then again, neither does the film from The Impossible Project (if you don't know about this yet then click on over and read up. Note their refurbished cameras...). However, lucky for me I was gifted a couple packs of Impossible's silver shade 600. It's in the fridge right now waiting for a good excuse to see the light. I'm having trouble waiting.

P O L A R O I D

Earlier this summer a couple of things happened...

1. I got myself a Polaroid 1-step camera (thank you, Goodwill) and sourced a pack of expired 600 film.
2. A special lady + me celebrated our first year of marriage with a vacation out to Hood River where we stayed at a wonderful B&B.

I just got around to scanning in the Polaroids I took that weekend and that's what you just saw, in all of their digital glory. I love the way these turned out.
